Definitive Guide To Installing Blender Addons

How Not To Install Addons...

There's no need to dig around in your computer's folders just to install an addon. In this article you'll learn the easiest way to install all addons.

Reasons why this is bad:

• Blender installs its settings in different places depending on the operating system. This means different instructions for people using different types of computers which makes the install process so much more ridiculous than it needs to be...

• Even if you find the right folder, it's all for nothing! You still have to access Blender's User Preferences window to activate the addon. It could have all been done from the same screen.

• All addons can be easily installed right from within Blender. There is one catch, knowing when you need to select a .py or a .zip when selecting the addon to install from the user preferences window.

How To Install Addons...

1. Open Blender & select the "File" menu.

Under "File" select "User Preferences". Select the "Add-ons" tab at the top of the user preferences window then select "Install From File" at the bottom of the window.

2. Select the right file type.

Here's the tricky part. Some addons must be installed by directly selecting the Python (.py) file while others can only be installed as a zip file. If you don't find a folder with "__init__.py" inside the downloaded package, and instead find something like this "someSweetAddon.py" then it means you have to unzip it first so you can select "someSweetAddon.py".

3. Browse through your computer.

After pressing "Install From File" you'll be taken to Blender's file manager where you can browse through your computer's folders to select the file you need (be it someAddon.py or a .zip file). Once you've selected the right file press "Install From File" again (this time in the top right corner).

4. Check the box.

Once installed, check its box to activate it. Press "Save User Settings" near the bottom left of the User Preferences window before you go. This ensures the addon will stay activated.

Our New Addon Distribution Policy

All addons from blendersensei.com will now be distributed in ".zip" format only. We hope other developers follow suit and help do away with the general confusion surrounding installation.

Reasons for choosing the zip method:
Less work to install (you don't have to bother unzipping first).
More functionality (zipped addons can house multiple files).

NOTE: Some addons (such as Drag & Drop Environments) come with additional assets which require the overall package to first be unzipped. If you see the words "UNZIP_ME" in the name of a zip file, you should unzip it. If not, then that's the thing you select when installing.
